I’m going to Alaska…

12 Jul

For a week.

Writing in 140 character increments can be frustrating at times so I figured I’d chronicle this trip via a blog. I’ll be spending the next week in Alaska, exploring the state by foot, boat, plane, submersible, and probably some other Transformer-like automatons.

Big.

Eight of us, including my father, will be aboard the MV Alucia, an 183 foot expedition ship  designed for extended deployments in remote and challenging locations. The vessel is typically used for private exploration (us) and research (not us).

Hopefully not sleeping in here...

Our itinerary is in the hands of Mike McDowell, founder of an explorations company called  Deep Ocean Expeditions. I’ve been given little direction as to the activities we will be participating in, except for a packing list and a few pointers :

1) There are 20 hours of day light in Alaska in July

My reading: Bring a sleep mask and Nyquil. Also, lots of day drinking…

2) Temperatures in July range range between 40F-60F, but can reach lows of 20F to a recent high of 93F

My reading: Sounds like a broken thermostat. I’ll need to wear lots of layers… I may just order those tear away pants I’ve always wanted

Tear away pants

3) Bring insect repellant, the mosquitoes can be fierce

My reading: Better than bed bugs, I guess. I just saw an ad for Clip-On mosquito repellant and I just may buy it.

P.S. I wanted the background of this page to be bright yellow but figured that might adversely attract attention if you are reading this at work.
